Upcoming events

    • 15 Sep 2025
    • 14 Nov 2025

    Call for Abstracts for the
    2026 SEAoNY Annual Conference

The conference will be held in Midtown New York on Thursday, February 12, 2026. The 2026 conference theme will center on the dynamics of balancing preservation with innovation, from structural retrofits, innovative re-use strategies to adaptive design.

Reimagining Structures: Adaptive Re-Use in Practice

Around the world, cities are being transformed not by new construction alone, but by the creative reimagining of existing structures. Adaptive reuse challenges engineers to think beyond the blueprint, breathing new life into aging buildings while advancing sustainability and resilience. This conference will showcase pioneering projects and cutting-edge techniques that turn constraints into opportunities. Attendees will hear from leading practitioners on structural retrofits, innovative reuse strategies, and the role of adaptive design in reducing embodied carbon and revitalizing communities. Join us to explore how structural engineers are shaping the future—by reinventing the past.

    Potential topics include:

    • Advances in Assessment Methodologies
    • Design Strategies and Construction Technologies that Enable the Extension of the Life Cycle of Structures
    • Updates to the NYC Existing Building Code
    • Integration of Modern Codes with Legacy Construction
    • Project Case Studies - Adaptation of Structures for New Functions (e.g. Office to Residential Conversions)
    • Project Case Studies - Preservation of Existing Structures
    • Analysis and Design of Antiquated Structural Systems
    • Sustainability and Carbon Reduction

Presenters should plan a 45-60 minute presentation for an audience of structural engineers, code officials, students, and design and construction peers. We ask that all interested presenters complete the 2026 SEAoNY Annual Conference Abstract Form by November 14, 2025. Selected presenters will be notified December 12, 2025.

Please submit your abstract using this form.

Tushar Nagananda is a licensed PE (NY) with over eleven years of structural design experience spanning billion-dollar projects including the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, NYU Langone Kimmel Pavilion, and Google HQ. An alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he has worked at Leslie E. Robertson Associates and currently leads research and design initiatives at Entuitive.

Recognizing the transformative potential of automation in structural engineering, Tushar self-taught Python, Rhino, and Grasshopper, developing custom applications for vibration analysis, pile layout automation, and high-rise design. His portfolio showcases practical implementations across diverse project types, from feature stair analysis to SAG mill support structures.

Passionate about democratizing computational tools, Tushar teaches courses at his firm and develops web applications that make complex engineering calculations accessible to his colleagues. His work bridges traditional structural engineering with modern parametric design, demonstrating how automation can enhance both design efficiency and engineering precision.

Preetam Biswas is Structural Engineering Principal at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). As both a structural engineer and an architect, Preetam Biswas excels at designing innovative yet simple and constructible systems and led the structural design of several award-winning tall buildings, long-span structures, and small-scale specialty structures. He was drawn to design by the natural world, inspired by the beauty and structural efficiency of a spider’s web and a desire to replicate that efficiency in the built environment—whether it’s a small canopy or a large industrial complex. Approaching his projects from this standpoint, he designs towers, airports, stadiums, and more to celebrate the structure within the architecture.

Preetam has authored and edited numerous technical publications  and served as editor and lead author of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Design and Performance of Tall Buildings for Wind. He actively participates in various committees, currently serving as the Chair of ASCE Tall Buildings Committee and member of the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) Code Advisory Committee. He also serves as an academic advisor at Syracuse University and New York University.

    Amory Martin
is a Managing Engineer at Exponent in the Civil & Structural Engineering practice. Dr. Martin specializes in investigating structural failures, disaster risk management, and earthquake engineering. He has experience in dynamic analysis of complex structural systems, computational simulation of structures subject to extreme loads, and optimization of innovative seismic protective systems.

As a consultant, Dr. Martin has served on projects involving structural collapse, seismic performance of highway bridges, multi-hazard risk analysis, and construction defects and code compliance issues of high-rise buildings. His expertise includes structural optimization, statistical analysis and data-driven techniques related to hazard analysis and seismic performance of steel and concrete structures.

Dr. Martin developed seismic capacity design methods for steel rocking braced frames and validated them through nonlinear response history analysis. He developed structural topology optimization algorithms for buildings under seismic excitation and implemented the procedure for large-scale 3D structures using high-performance computing. He also developed optimization algorithms for nonlinear dampers of stacked rocking systems using a novel ground motion selection procedure. Dr. Martin is an Adjunct Professor at New York University, where he teaches a graduate course on structural dynamics.

Daniel Ki joined Severud Associates as an engineer in 2015 and in 2019, progressed to senior engineer. In 2021, he advanced to associate. His decade of design experience has yielded a thorough grasp of structural analysis, including specialized areas such as parametric design and employing computational methods to automate design and related tasks. Dan’s major projects include 100 Vandam Street in Manhattan, a residential tower built over and within an existing building, Halletts Point Building 10, a residential building in Queens, and 43 Gatehouse Road, a commercial building in Stamford, Connecticut.

Dan was co-editor of Cross Sections, the quarterly newsletter of the Structural Engineers Association of New York, from 2019 to 2021.

Dan is licensed as a structural engineer in Nevada and as a professional engineer in New York. He earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering and Master of Engineering in structural engineering from Cornell University.

Property owners are now required by law to file compliance reports for parking structures. This presentation will review different types of parking structures, the maintenance difficulties and inspection nuances, the details of the code requirements, and lessons learned in cycle 1A.

Parking structures come in many forms and materials, whether it’s detached cast-in-place concrete, or a few levels below grade of an office building with concrete-encased, steel framing. In all cases, these structures are home to a caustic environment thanks to the regular exposure to oil, gasoline, and de-icing solutions that come from their primary occupants. Owners of parking structures are required to have structures inspected by an engineer and submit compliance reports every six years as of January 1, 2022. This presentation will go over the data that is relevant to parking structures in NYC that informed the development of the Code and Rule. This presentation will also delve into some of the details of how one can become a Qualified Parking Structure Inspector (QPSI). The presentation will also discuss the early initial observations.
