    SEAoNY Programs Committee Presents:

    Designing Mass Timber
    Construction for Blast Loading

    DATE: Thursday, August 21, 2025

    TIME: 6:00 - 8:00 PM

    LOCATION: The Center
    208 West 13th Street
    Room 101
    New York, NY 10011

    1 PDH Available

There has been a notable expansion of the use of mass timber construction in North America in recent years. Sustainability and aesthetics are key drivers for mass timber construction, and the robustness of panelized products like cross-laminated timber (CLT) opens new possibilities in protective construction. To better understand mass timber’s performance under blast loading, a series of tests involving various types of mass timber have been performed. This presentation describes the current state of the science related to designing mass timber construction for blast loading. Tests on cross-laminated timber (CLT), mass ply panel (MPP), glued laminated timber (glulam), and reinforced CLT (RCLT) test articles performed to date (or are in the planning stages) are described. Based on the test data, conclusions are drawn, strategies for safely detailing mass timber structures are discussed, and potential changes to guidelines (e.g., PDC-TR 18-02) are proposed. The presentation concludes with defining areas that would benefit from further empirical investigation.

Tony Mazzo is a senior Principal and CEO of Urban Foundation/Engineering, LLC. Tony earned both his bachelor’s degree and his master’s degree in civil engineering from The City College of New York (CCNY) and is also a NYS licensed Professional Engineer.

In 1978, Tony began his professional career working for Slattery Associates. In 1981 Tony joined the Urban team, where he developed his professional expertise in both new foundation construction and structural alterations for existing buildings, which include apartment buildings, office towers, hospitals, museums, churches, schools, universities and landmark structures.

Tony is the inventor and owns the U.S. Patent for his “cylindrical core beam for high-capacity drilled-in-caissons”, first introduced in 2001 to support the super columns for the new Times Square Tower in New York City. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including The Moles, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Deep Foundations Institute. Tony is the Chairman of The Board of Trustees for the Medisys Health Network and is a former instructor for the NYU School for Continuing Education. He has authored a section in The McGraw Hill Construction Encyclopedia on the topic of “piling” and he has conducted many lectures at universities and professional societies on the technical aspects of foundation construction.

In 1998, Tony managed the design and historic relocation of the landmark Empire Theater. The 100 years old theater was moved 170 feet along West 42nd Street, in the heart of Times Square, using a pile supported steel rail system and a series of long stroke hydraulic jacks.

In 2009, Tony received the “Leader of Industry” award from the Concrete Industry Board.

In 2022, Tony designed and managed the historic raising of the landmark Palace Theater, weighing 7000 tons, to a height of 30 feet above sidewalk level in the middle of Times Square. Tony holds a U.S. Patent for inventing his proprietary “hydraulic lifting caisson”, which served as the lifting mechanism to successfully lift the Palace Theater to its new height. Later that year, Tony received the Engineering News Record “Award of Excellence” and was honored as one of ENR’s Top Newsmakers of 2022.

    SEAoNY Programs Committee Presents:

    Mass Timber Connections

    DATE: Tuesday, September 16, 2025

    TIME: 12:00 - 1:00 PM

    Zoom Webinar

Mass timber construction offers a unique combination of sustainability, adaptable design, and aesthetics that have given rise to dozens of elegant structures across the globe. With the recent code changes in the US, it is easier than ever for designers to use mass timber in bigger, taller buildings. These mass timber elements are capable of supporting large loads, and accordingly, the connections in these structures must be equally capable of safely transferring the structural demands.

Proper design and detailing of connections are imperative for the performance of any structure, and timber design is no different. This presentation will address some of the important elements for mass timber connection design, including structural design provisions, fire-resistant connection design, and details to consider when using pre-engineered solutions such as beam hangers. A discussion of the influence of connector placement on brittle failure in wood elements, seismic drift performance, and fire performance will be included.

SEAoNY Sustainable Design Committee & Upstate Chapter Present:

Lower the Volume! Reducing the Cubic Yards of Concrete as a Carbon Reduction Strategy

    DATE: Thursday, September 25, 2025

    TIME: 12:00 - 1:00 PM

    Zoom Webinar

Strategies to reduce embodied carbon from concrete usually involve modifications to the mix design, typically focusing on the type of cement and limiting its amount per cubic yard. In addition, carefully considered structural engineering choices can reduce the amount of concrete used on a project without sacrificing structural performance or durability. This material optimization approach results in a linear reduction of CO2e emissions: less concrete = less emissions. We’ll explore some concrete volume reduction possibilities, including:

    • Spread footing optimization
    • Avoidance of excessive footing depths
    • Frost-protected shallow foundations
    • Concrete redux with flowable fill / cellular concrete
    • Right-sizing foundation wall thicknesses
    • Use of Geofoam to reduce retaining wall sizes
    • Slab-on-grade strategies
