SEAoNY Programs Committee Presents:
Structural Engineering Failures and the Standard of Care
DATE: Thursday, August 15, 2024
TIME: 6:00 - 8:30 PM
LOCATION: The Center
208 West 13th Street
Room 101
1.5 Ethics PDH
Engineering failures come in many forms: from buildings that are not constructible, to designs that do not meet code intent or owner requirements, to material failures leading to loss of property and life. In all cases, there are strong financial incentives to assign blame. But the degree of an engineer’s liability can depend on whether the engineer has met their standard care, often defined as performing as what a reasonably prudent engineer in similar circumstances and with the same information would do. Through discussion of several cases studies of structural engineering failures, including both collapses and designs wit alleged deficiency, this talk will discuss the engineering standard of care and the process of identifying responsible parties when a failure has occurred. The seminar will discuss the differences from negligence and liability, and how that ties into the standard of care.
6:00 - 6:30 PM: Mingling and Refreshments

Dr. Jampole specializes in evaluating the performance of structures subjected to extreme loads such as earthquakes, wind, and flood events and in performance-based analysis and risk assessments. He has served as a consultant on projects assessing the origin of damage and cause of collapse of structures following earthquakes, extreme weather events, adjacent construction incidents, corrosion and deterioration, settlement, and long-term issues. Dr. Jampole currently serves as an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University, where he teaches a course on forensic engineering. He is extensively involved in the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute through the Learning from Earthquakes Program. Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Jampole assisted in teaching courses in the behavior and design of structural systems, earthquake engineering, and performance-based design at Stanford University.
