SEAoNYStructural Engineers Association of New York
SEAoNY Student Outreach Committee and
Young Member Group presents
Basics of Parametric Design with Grasshopper
Thursday March 31
5:30 - 7:30pm
Are you interested in learning how Parametric Design can expand your design skill set? Are you ready to learn an exciting and powerful tool that will allow you to iterate, optimize, and create incredible geometry?
This hands-on Parametric Design virtual workshop will introduce the principles of parametric design and introduce the necessary skills and ability to use Grasshopper. During this workshop, by working through a few simple exercises, we will explore some of the ways that Grasshopper can change our work as structural engineers.
Parametric design works combining geometry and variables in an automated way. These variables can be modified to alter and update the final design at any moment, without having to manually remake the 3D model. That means it is possible to generate complex shapes with specific data and get endless families of design with diverse results.
Grasshopper is a free visual programming tool included in Rhinoceros, a popular architectural modeling program. Grasshopper requires no prior knowledge of programming or scripting, but still allows designers to build structure generators from the simple to the awe-inspiring.
To follow along with the workshop, please install Rhino on your computer. Rhino 7 is available for Mac or Windows. If you already have an earlier version of Rhino, that will be fine for this workshop. Rhino offers a 90-day free trial with only a valid email address required for sign up at this link: https://www.rhino3d.com/download/
