the Upstate SEAoNY Chapter present:

Building Envelopes and Energy Code for Structural Engineers

January 25, 2022

12:00 PM - 1:15 PM

Zoom Webinar

Event Details:

Structural engineers who work on buildings need to understand the basics of thermal envelope performance and some key elements of the governing Energy Conservation Code as aspects of their work can significantly affect a building’s energy usage.

At this webinar, we'll review basic code requirements and clarify compliance path options. We’ll also look at foundation and slab insulation requirements, considerations for wall and roof systems, air barrier requirements, and details to minimize structural thermal bridging. Finally, we’ll identify code trends that affect structural details. At the end of webinar an open Q&A session will be available so that our presenter can have the opportunity to answer your questions on these topics.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the basics of thermal envelope performance for buildings.

2. Learn about Energy Code requirements relevant for structural engineers and how those requirements impact structural design and detailing of buildings.

3. Gain knowledge of how a structural engineer can significantly impact a building’s energy usage.

4. Learn how to correctly detail structural elements to minimize structural thermal bridging.

Speakers:

Jim D’Aloisio, PE is a Principal with Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt in East Syracuse, NY. He has over 30 years’ experience in the design of new buildings, renovations, and building assessments. A structural engineer by training (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), he’s also a thermographer and performs building envelope commissioning and consulting. He presents Energy Code training and training on other topics, having presented over 300 times. He’s on the SEI Sustainability Committee, and on two other ASCE committees. Specialties include detailing to minimize structural thermal bridging, the use of alternative structural systems and design approaches that can reduce the CO2 emissions of structures and foundations.
