SEAoNY YMG & ASCE SEI Met Section Chapter:

Please NOTE: Julie Cohen’s lecture on “UNRECOGNIZED KNOWLEDGE: RECURRING STRUCTURAL FAILURES” has been postponed.

Tonight’s alternate lecture will be “Bad Vibrations: Forensic Investigations of Dynamic Structures” presented by Charles DeVore, Ph.D., P.E..

“Bad Vibrations: Forensic Investigations of Dynamic Structures”

About the Speaker

Dr. DeVore is a forensic engineering consultant at Exponent, Inc. who provides specialized services in noise and vibration monitoring for buildings, bridges, equipment, and other structures. He has experience collecting and analyzing acoustic and vibration information for use in structural health monitoring, earthquake engineering, construction vibrations, and sound level studies. Dr. DeVore’s background is in structural dynamics and he is an expert in the areas of structural health monitoring and control for buildings, bridges, and other structures. He is also an adjunct professor at New York University where he teaches Structural Dynamics.

Abstract

Service vibrations can cause unacceptable performance for buildings when subjected to dynamic loads. When a structure has a natural frequency near the same frequency as the dynamic load, significant amplification can occur that causes vibrations that limits the use of the space. This presentation will provide a discussion of the current practice of vibration design and dynamic forensic analysis. Several case studies will be offered along with design guidance for future structures.

1.5 PDH Credits will be offered (pending)

Registration opens at 5:45pm and light refreshments will be served.

Seminar begins promptly at 6:15pm

For SEAoNY and ASCE members, registration is $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Non-members will be $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

The event will take place at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place.

A ‘Recap & Rewind’ session will be hosted immediately afterwards at the Malt House (206 Thompson St).  All lecture attendees are welcome. Light appetizers will be provided for the group.
