This event will review portions of the 2022 NYC Building Code related to construction safety and lot line construction including monitoring, special inspection, excavation, demolition, and site safety requirements. Building Code chapters to be discussed include Chapter 17, Chapter 18 and Chapter 33. Examples and case studies will be reviewed.

The event will focus on content in the New York City's Building Code Chapter 33: "Safeguards During Construction & Demolition" that is relevant to practicing structural consultants, including:

  • General Site Safety Requirements
  • Adjacent Building & Property Required Protections and Notifications
  • Support of Excavation Requirements
  • Demolition Document Requirements and Assessments
  • Requirements for Cold-formed Steel Construction
  • Monitoring Requirements & Responsibilities

Course Outline:

  1. Introduction of Course (5 minutes)
  2. Topic Site Safety and Adjacent Property Requirements (10 minutes)
  3. Topic Support of Excavation and Foundation Requirements (10 minutes)
  4. Topic Demolition and Cold-formed Steel Requirements (10 minutes)
  5. Topic Monitoring and Special Inspection Requirements (10 minutes)
  6. Question and answer - (10 minutes)

Geoff Eisele, PE is an Executive Engineer at the NYC Department of Buildings with the Engineering Services division and has over 20 years of experience in the AEC industry. In his role he oversees the technical and engineering operations for the Department’s Engineering Services Units. Mr. Eisele also performs structural and forensic investigations for major incidents and accidents at construction sites throughout the five boroughs. Prior to joining DOB Mr. Eisele worked as a structural design engineer for a private consulting engineering firm in NYC where he worked on a multitude of various building designs including new construction, renovation and historic preservation projects.

Matthew Millner, PE is a Director of Engineering at the NYC Department of Buildings with the Construction Safety Engineering and Concrete Enforcement Units and has over 17 years of experience in the AEC industry. Matt provides supervision and oversight to a team of more than 15 professional engineers and technical staff. The Units conduct technical audits and reviews related to filed applications for: excavations, interior demolitions and alterations, superstructures, construction equipment and pedestrian protections. Unit engineers respond in real-time to construction incidents throughout the five boroughs. Prior to joining the DOB, Matt worked as a structural design engineer for an engineering firm performing building design work and construction administration.
