Specification Writing Advice for More Sustainable Steel Projects

Hosted by the
Sustainable Design Committee

DATE: February 1, 2023
TIME: 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm Zoom Webinar

Structural Engineers have the opportunity to include language in project specifications that will influence the selection of materials by the procurement team. When carefully researched, the specification team can identify structural steel manufactured with the lowest impact to the environment.

In this webinar, the presenter will offer the appropriate background information and benchmark criteria that can be used to determine the acceptance of suppliers and products. He will also outline the documentation that the supplier requires in order for assessment of their ability to meet said criteria.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the structural steel manufacturing process and why sourcing sustainable steel is important.
  • Identify the appropriate environmental impact metrics and criteria to allow for sustainable procurement decisions.
  • Determine the documentation to request from the procurement team and recognize how to extract benchmark criteria from them.
  • Recognize which specifications sections can be updated and the language that may be added to allow for sustainable procurement.
  • Discover additional best practices that may contribute to successful procurement of sustainable materials.
