SEAoNY Presents:

Digital Design & Fabrication of Little Island at Pier 55

September 14, 2021

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Zoom Webinar

Little Island is a new pier that opened in May of 2021 to provide New York with new 2.5 acre park and cultural programming space on the Hudson River at 14th street.   The signature design features irregular complex curved surface precast concrete “pots” which set the park apart from conventional pier structures but also imposed significant challenges for design, documentation, fabrication and erection.   The geometry was not possible to convey via conventional 2d documentation and proved most viably designed and constructed through use of direct to manufacturing digital fabrication techniques for all of the complex geometry elements.

Objectives and Learning Methods:

It will focus on the digital fabrication and automated design processes used to deliver the Little Island Project.

  1. How constraints of constructability and durability feed into the conceptualization of a project in a marine environment
  2. Strategies for organizing complex geometry projects to be suitable for precast concrete
  3. How digital design techniques can be used to deliver complex geometry construction projects effectively
  4. How traditional engineering and contractor scope boundaries need to adjust in order to effectively implement digital fabrication processes
  5. Strategies for dealing with tolerances of pile construction in marine environments

Speaker:

David Farnsworth is a Principal with Arup’s New York Office and has a depth of experience in the design and management of projects both locally and globally. David leads Arup’s Americas Property Market and has design experience encompassing many program types, construction materials, and methods of construction.  He has designed some of the world’s most iconic tall building structures including Marina Bay Sands Hotel Towers in Singapore, the Northeast Asia Trade Tower in Incheon Korea, and the Citic Tower in Beijing.  He has a keen interest in the interface between design and construction and has worked on a number of projects that utilize digital fabrication techniques and prefabrication to facilitate construction of complex projects.
