SEAoNY January Seminar
Case Study of Jet Hangars Collapse
January 15, 2019
6:15 PM - 8:00 PM
Center for Architecture | 536 LaGuardia Place, New York, NY 10012
Presented By: Ibrahim Erdem, PhD, PE
Three hangars that were constructed at a large airport in 2005 collapsed during a blizzard in 2010, causing significant damage to many private corporate jet aircraft contained inside them.
This presentation evaluates the cause(s) of the collapse and contributing factors. The presenter’s investigation consisted of field investigations; review of the original design drawings, fabrication drawings, structural calculations, applicable design codes; structural analysis and calculations; and review of metallurgical testing and examination results.
The presentation also examines the roles and responsibilities of the various parties, such as the designers hired by the owner, the firm that designed and fabricated the hangars, the engineer that signed and sealed the structural design, and the shop inspectors. The presentation also contains recommendations to reduce the probability of similar future collapses.
Learning objectives:
- Structural drawings and calculations should be signed and sealed by the engineer who performs the work or supervises the work
- Engineer should review shop drawings
- Structural calculations should go through an internal review process
- Owner should hire inspector
- Special inspections should be high quality
- Welders should not guess
