SEAoNY Sustainable Design Committee & Upstate Chapter Present:
Lower the Volume! Reducing the Cubic Yards of Concrete as a Carbon Reduction Strategy
DATE: Thursday, September 25, 2025
TIME: 12:00 - 1:00 PM
Zoom Webinar
Strategies to reduce embodied carbon from concrete usually involve modifications to the mix design, typically focusing on the type of cement and limiting its amount per cubic yard. In addition, carefully considered structural engineering choices can reduce the amount of concrete used on a project without sacrificing structural performance or durability. This material optimization approach results in a linear reduction of CO2e emissions: less concrete = less emissions. We’ll explore some concrete volume reduction possibilities, including:
- Spread footing optimization
- Avoidance of excessive footing depths
- Frost-protected shallow foundations
- Concrete redux with flowable fill / cellular concrete
- Right-sizing foundation wall thicknesses
- Use of Geofoam to reduce retaining wall sizes
- Slab-on-grade strategies
