Event Details:

A panel of trailblazing structural engineers who have started or grown their structural consulting firms will share their experiences and challenges. Panelists will be asked a series of questions related to growing a structural consulting firm by the moderator, then the floor will be opened up to Q&A from the audience.

Questions to include:

  1. What steps were necessary for growth of the business? At what point did you start hiring employees?
  2. How involved are you in the day-to-day operations?
  3. What part do metrics play in your organization and when did you add them?
  4. How did the pandemic affect business?
  5. What advice would you give others looking to start or grow a structural consulting firm?

Speakers:

Robert Murray | Murray Engineering: Robert Murray has over three decades of diversified building and construction experience. As Founder and Principal of Murray Engineering for over 20 years, and Licensed in multiple states, he has utilized his versatile experience in Structural and Forensic Engineering to successfully complete numerous projects varying in scope and size from new building design, historical restoration, forensic investigation of building structures to modular buildings and special structures.

Erik Madsen | Madsen Consulting Engineering: Erik has extensive experience in the design and construction of new building structures, adaptive reuse projects, property condition assessment and the design of temporary structures for construction. Prior to starting Madsen Consulting Engineering in 2010, he worked at DeSimone Consulting Engineering for more than eight years. He is a member of the current NYC Department of Buildings Code Revision Structural Technical Committee for the new NYC Building Code and he was part of the previous committee for the 2014 NYC Building Code.

Alastair Elliott | Silman: Alastair joined Silman in 1995 and since 2014, he has led the firm as Principal and is now Director of Operations. In addition to his responsibilities as Director of Operations, he has overseen a broad range of project types for cultural and educational institutions, places of worship, and hospitality. His experience has included designing for renovation, adaptive reuse, and new construction.
