Join us for an in person tour of the first cross-laminated timber (CLT) building constructed in New York State located in Farmington between Syracuse and Rochester in Upstate NY. The tour will start off with a 1 hour (1 PDH) presentation from the building designers (they will be virtual) with opportunity for questions, followed by a tour of the CLT structure. The presentation is only available to in-person attendees.

- What is a CLT and when is it considered sustainability benefit
- Balancing engineering and esthetic needs in design
- Cantilevered beams & bridge trusses: why truss design & connections matters
- How a found-form tree can act as a load bearing column

Jonathan Orpin founded New Energy Works and Pioneer Millworks over 30 years ago operating on the triple bottom line—a simple belief that people, planet, and profit work together to ensure a better future. From their studio-shops and mills in New York and Oregon New Energy Works design, craft, and build sustainable custom homes, buildings, and high-performance enclosures throughout North America. Their sister company Pioneer Millworks manufacture reclaimed and sustainable wood flooring, paneling, siding, and decking for the building industry.
Ben Brungraber, Ph.D., P.E.
Fire Tower Engineered Timber
Ben Brungraber, Ph.D., P.E. is a company co-founder and timber frame visionary with more than forty years of experience in the field, including trend-setting research on mortise and tenon joinery.
In his early years, Ben worked in the construction industry after acquiring his civil engineering degree from Cornell. His jobs included inspecting the concrete used in the Washington DC subway, and helping American Bridge build steel high-rise structures, long-span bridges and steel mills. After many years of teaching and various wide-reaching roles in the field, Ben reconnected with colleague, Mack Magee, and started Fire Tower Engineered Timber, which quickly evolved into one of the timber frame industry’s most ambitious and respected design and engineering firms.
