Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering with Application to a Bridge Structure
Performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) is emerging as the next-generation design and evaluation framework under which new and existing structures will be analyzed for seismic adequacy. This webinar presents the application of the PBEE methodology developed at the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center to the Humboldt Bay Middle Channel (HBMC) Bridge modeled and analyzed as a nonlinear soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) system.
07.28.09: Bill Thornton Webinar: July 28, 2009 - Connections: The Last Bastion of Rational Design
Connections: The Last Bastion of Rational Design
Connections have been referred to as the “Last Bastion of Rational Design” because there is very limited software available for design. Therefore, engineers need to understand the fundamentals of connection design. Because of the widespread use of software for structural design, a well-known engineer in the UK has stated, “Any fool can design a structure. It takes an engineer to design a connection.”
This seminar will present the fundamental basis of connection design, the Lower Bound Theorem of Limit Analysis. Discussion will include single and multiple load path connections, analysis assumptions and reality. Economic aspects of connections and the Lower Bound Theorem are related, as are the art and science of connection design.
