LERA is proud to sponsor a new documentary titled "Leaning Out: An Intimate Look at Twin Towers Engineer Leslie E. Robertson," about the life and work of one of the most influential figures in the history of structural engineering. Produced by Basia and Leonard Myszynski of sOlar eye communications, the documentary has been chosen as the opening film for the 10th annual Architecture & Design Film Festival in New York City from October 16th to 21st. The film will also be screened as a live webinar during AISC's SteelDay 2018 on September 26th.

A retired partner of the firm, Dr. Leslie E. Robertsonspent his six-decade engineering career transforming urban and rural landscapes through innovative design. Among a plethora of renowned projects, he led the structural design of the World Trade Center (New York, NY); the U.S. Steel Tower (Pittsburgh, PA); the Bank of China Tower (Hong Kong); Puerta de Europa (Madrid, Spain); Shanghai World Financial Center (Shanghai, China); Suzhou Museum (Suzhou, China); Meyerson Symphony Center (Dallas, TX); and the Miho Museum and Bridge (Kyoto, Japan). In addition, he participated in the structural design of Nakheel Tall Tower (1,000 m; Dubai, UAE), Merdeka PNB118 (630 m; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), the Suzhou Center landscaped pedestrian bridges (Suzhou, China), Miho Chapel (Kyoto, Japan) and Lotte World Tower (555 m; Seoul, South Korea).

2019 AISC IDEAS2: Call for Entries

Show the great work your firm does in steel through entering the 2019 Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel (IDEAS2) Awards competition! Architectural and engineering firms, structural steel companies, general contractors and owners are encouraged to enter steel-framed building projects in the competition. Conducted annually by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), this awards program recognizes excellence and innovation in the use of structural steel on building projects across the country. The award is the highest honor bestowed on building projects by the U.S. structural steel industry.

"The IDEAS2 Awards is how we recognize the innovative and progressive ways that you use the versatility, utility and beauty of structural steel in your projects," said Charles J. Carter, SE, PE, PhD, AISC's president. "You amaze us every year and we look forward to another year of your incredible work."

Winning projects receive their awards at the project sites during special presentations to which the project team and local dignitaries will be invited. The winning projects will also be recognized at NASCC: The Steel Conference in St. Louis, April 3-5, 2019.

The IDEAS2 jury represents a cross-section of the structural steel design, fabrication and construction industries. Including a diverse panel helps the jury highlight steel solutions to the challenges designers and constructors face in all building types and sizes. Entries will be judged in three categories according to constructed value: Less than $15 million; $15 million to $75 million; and Greater than $75 million. There is also a category for sculptures, art installations and non-building structures.

SEAoNY 2019 Honorary Member Guy Nordenson 

Guy Nordenson is a practicing structural engineer, teacher and writer, and is active in coastal adaptation research and design. His research project and book On the Water | Palisade Bay (Hatje Cantz 2010) won the 2007 American Institute of Architects Latrobe Research Prize, and served as the basis for the 2010 Museum of Modern Art workshop and exhibition “Rising Currents.” With his firm Guy Nordenson and Associates, he was the engineer for the 2004 MoMA expansion in New York, the Fort Worth Kimbell Art Museum expansion, the National Museum of African American History and Culture superstructure in Washington DC, the Jubilee Church in Rome and over 200 other buildings. He was Commissioner and Secretary of the NYC Public Design Commission from 2006 to 2015 and is a member of the NYC Panel on Climate Change. His books also include Seven Structural Engineers (MoMA 2008), and Patterns and Structure and Reading Structures (Lars Muller, 2010 and 2016). In 2013 his team at Princeton was awarded a major grant by the Rockefeller Foundation to develop “Structures of Coastal Resilience” in collaboration with the US Army Corps of Engineers and teams from Harvard, City College of New York, and the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught at Columbia and MIT, and since 1995, is a professor of architecture and engineering at Princeton.

NEW WEBSITE LAUNCHED TO INTEREST KIDS IN ENGINEERING CAREERS

Englewood Cliffs, NJ, May 3, 2018—Those Amazing Professions Inc. (TAP) announces the launch of www.thoseamazingengineers.com, a website to inform young people about careers in engineering through real life examples of what engineers do and where they work. The site, particularly appropriate for middle school students who are at an age when they begin to think about careers, can be used with students in upper elementary and high school as well. The publicly available site was developed with a lead grant from The Thornton Tomasetti Foundation and with matching funds from The National Academy of Construction, the New York Building Foundation, and the Structural Engineers Association of New York.

The site will help students understand how their classroom science, technology, engineering and math programs (STEM) are relevant to actual career options that can help change the world. Information and video links illustrate the variety of engineering disciplines and professional opportunities, examples of places to work, and ideas on how to get started, as well as some of the latest and most innovative work being done by engineers today. For teachers, the site includes resources and suggested classroom activities to engage students and challenge their imagination.

The basis for the site is the highly touted book, Those Amazing Engineers, produced by Trilogy Publications LLC, with over 90,000 copies sold nationwide. Trilogy has donated the books and the copyright of Those Amazing Engineers to TAP. Rose Reichman, Executive Director of TAP, states “The digital version of Those Amazing Engineers builds on the success of the book and makes the content free to users and universally accessible. It also allows TAP to easily update and adapt the material in response to teacher and student feedback.”

Those Amazing Professions Inc. (TAP) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 whose mission is to educate young people about careers in underserved professions. The engineering website is its first initiative. What is The Steel Conference?

NASCC: The Steel Conference is the premier educational and networking event for the structural steel industry. The Steel Conference offers more than 130 sessions on topics ranging from "Stiffeners, Doublers, Web Plates-Oh My!" to "10 Seismic Lessons from the Design of Large and Complex Structures" to a "Diagrid and Mega-Braced Structures-Stability and Design Approaches." What is the World Steel Bridge Symposium?

The World Steel Bridge Symposium (WSBS) brings together bridge design engineers, construction professionals, academics, transportation officials, fabricators, erectors and builders to discuss and learn state-of-the-art practices for enhancing steel bridge design, fabrication and construction techniques.

What is the SSRC Annual Stability Conference?

The Structural Stability Research Council's Annual Stability Conference has been held in conjunction with the Steel Conference since 2001. In addition to 13 sessions with more than 30 papers, the SSRC Conference includes the 2018 Beedle Award and MAJR Medal presentations.

How Many PDHs can I Earn?

The conference offers 16 PDHs plus an additional 4 PDHs if they attend the optional Tuesday short courses.  AISC is a registered continuing education provider for the State of New York, and all PDH opportunities comply with the new New York State requirements.
