Shadow a Structural Engineer is an opportunity provided by SEAoNY to college students who wish to learn more about the everyday life of a structural engineer (the nuts and bolts!) Each student will be paired with a professional to follow him/her through a typical workday, which may include structural design and analysis, review and markups of drawings, construction administration - maybe even a site visit, if permitted!

    • Professionals would only be expected to commit to one 4-hour session with a student
    • Students will be randomly paired with professionals
    • Students will be informed that this is NOT an interview, just a way to see a practicing engineer in their typical day
    • Coordination of specific date/time will be on a case-by-case basis, and coordinated directly between the matched student and professional.

For more information, please contact the Student Outreach Committee at studentoutreach@seaony.org.

NCEES has updated their website to include a notice of changes being made to the PE Civil: Structural Exam. The change to the exam will take place starting April of 2024. The main change to the new exam is that the traditional “breadth” portion of the exam consisting of general Civil questions (i.e. Hydraulics and Hydrology, Soil Mechanics, etc.) will be removed. In replacement of the “breadth” portion will be a longer “depth” portion with questions emphasizing on analysis and design principles of structural components. Referenced codes and standards will also be updated (i.e. ASCE 7-16, AISC 360 15th edition, etc.). The optional scheduled break will still remain. For more information on the exam and the new exam specifications, please visit the link below.

SEAoNY’s YMG Committee will be presenting a webinar discussing these exam specifications, how to apply to take the exam and test taking strategies this upcoming February and March. Be sure to attend if these changes will impact you.

As part of SEAoNY’s mission to advance the art of structural engineering by building a community of colleagues, the Diversity Committee seeks to practice intentional inclusion and equity by identifying the myriad ways our membership is diverse. We are beginning this journey with an anonymous self-identification survey open to all SEAoNY members. Data collected from this survey will be used to develop more inclusive and responsive programming for our membership. Key demographic information will be shared at the Diversity event on October 31. This survey is the beginning of our long-term journey to better serve our members’ needs and perspectives. Your contributions to the survey will enhance SEAoNY.

AI in the Structural Engineering Profession

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been selected as the topic for the 2023-2024 National Council of Structural Engineers (NCSEA) Innovation in Structural Engineering Grant. NCSEA is seeking individuals who are interested in helping develop an AI foundation for the structural engineering profession. The initiative aims to identify and support groundbreaking advancements in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) through the following objectives:

    ·         Provide Education: Provide structural engineers with information on the latest developments in AI as it relates to the profession and outline future areas of study in future areas surrounding this topic.

    ·         Foster Innovation: Encourage structural engineers to explore, develop, and implement innovative AI solutions that enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and longevity of structural engineering practices.

    ·         Promote Collaboration: Foster collaboration between structural engineers, AI experts, and other industry partners by encouraging the exchange of ideas and expertise to drive progress in the field.

    ·         Address Industry Challenges: Address key challenges faced by the structural engineering industry through the application of AI technologies, including ethical and legal areas.

This year's NCSEA Innovation in Structural Engineering Grant presents a unique opportunity for structural engineers to push the boundaries of their field by understanding and leveraging AI technologies. By providing financial support, technical guidance, and a platform for knowledge sharing, this year’s program aims to catalyze transformative advancements in the profession and foster collaboration within the structural engineering community and between industry partners.
