Wind Design Topics in ASCE 7-22

In partnership with our Northeast neighbors and as a part of the NorthEast Coalition of Structural Engineers Associations (NECSEA), a discounted rate is being offered for NECSEA associations at this upcoming SEAConn seminar on ASCE 7-22 wind design topics. SEAoNY is a member of NECSEA and all SEAoNY members are eligible for a discounted rate to this event.

On Wednesday November 12th, 2025 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Glastonbury, CT, SEAConn will be hosting a half-day seminar presented by John O'Brien of PES Structural Engineers out of Atlanta, Georgia. The event will highlight wind design topics in ASCE 7-22. It will be broken down into four sessions:

What's New in ASCE 7-22: Highlights key technical changes to the ASCE 7-22 wind provisions. These changes will take effect early next year with Connecticut's Adoption of the 2024 International Building Code.

Wind Loads on Irregular Buildings: This session offers practical guidance on applying wind provisions to complex shapes and components by understanding how wind pressures interact with building geometry.

Wind Loads on Non-Building Structures: Chapters 29 and 30 of ASCE 7-22 address wind loads on a wide range of non-building structures and components attached to buildings. This session explains the background behind these provisions and demonstrates how to apply them - even to structures not explicitly indicated in the code.

Wind Considerations for Existing Building Renovations: will focus on wind-related design considerations in the International Existing Building Code (IEBC). It will discuss how repairs, alterations, and additions affect wind-resisting components and overall building performance. The session will also address common questions and share case studies demonstrating the use of the IEBC in practice.

John O’Brien, P.E., S.E. is a Senior Associate and Director of Structural Engineering at PES Structural Engineers in Atlanta, GA, with over 20 years of structural design experience. He has designed a wide range of essential facilities and commercial, industrial, and residential structures in high-wind regions. He serves as Chair of NCSEA’s Wind Engineering Committee and Chair of the ASCE 7 Chapter 29 Task Committee for Wind Loads on Other Structures and Building Appurtenances. He is also a member of the Chapter 32 Tornado Loads Task Committee and the Chapter 30 Task Committee for Wind Loads on Components and Cladding.

The event will examine how a consistent pursuit of blue-sky research by designers can advance technologies that result in new, substantive architecture.

The program begins with a presentation by structural engineer Bill Baker. Mr. Baker’s presentation will be followed by a conversation with Sigrid Adriaenssens and Thorsten Helbig, exploring the role of research in advancing architectural and structural innovation, and examining how engineering inquiry shapes the creation of new spatial and material possibilities.

The conversation will be moderated by Elizabeth O’Donnell.

Bill Baker is a structural engineering Consulting Partner at the architectural and engineering firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), where he led the structural engineering practice for over 20 years. He joined the firm in 1981, became a Partner in 1996 and transitioned to the role of a Consulting Partner in 2019. In addition to his professional practice, he teaches at MIT and the University of Cambridge.

Bill has designed buildings of all scales from single-family homes to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest manmade structure. While widely regarded for his work on supertall buildings, Bill’s expertise also extends to long-span roof structures and specialty structures such as the Broadgate Exchange House in London, the Entrance Pavilion for General Motors’ Headquarters in Detroit, and the Manulife Calgary Pedestrian Bridge. Baker has also collaborated with numerous artists including James Carpenter, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, James Turrell, Janet Echelman, and Jaume Plensa.

Throughout his career, he has been involved in research with the aim of creating new ideas and technology that will lead to both efficient structures and meaningful architecture. He shares his discoveries through publications, lectures, and teaching.

He is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering in the US and an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK. He has honorary doctorates from the University of Stuttgart, Heriot-Watt University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Missouri.

Sigrid Adriaenssens, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University and Director of the Form Finding Lab, investigates the mechanics of large-span structural surfaces through analytical, computational, and machine-learning approaches. Her work bridges the arts and engineering to generate resilient, adaptive forms and has earned recognition from the IASS, ASCE, and institutions worldwide.

Thorsten Helbig, founding partner of knippershelbig, leads an award-winning structural and façade engineering firm with offices in Stuttgart, New York, and Berlin. His practice integrates conceptual design with advanced fabrication technologies, exploring innovative uses of materials from carbon fiber composites to mass timber in collaboration with architects such as Renzo Piano, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Bjarke Ingels Group, and Steven Holl Architects.

Elizabeth O’Donnell is an architect and Distinguished Professor Adjunct at the Irwin S. Chanin School of where she served as Associate Dean from 2001 until 2019, and Acting Dean from 2013-2015. In practice, she has completed numerous residential and commercial projects in New York City, with an emphasis on the adaptive reuse of existing buildings and sites. Her work has been recognized with awards for Design Excellence from the AIA New York Chapter and for Design Distinction from International Design magazine.

The New York City Existing Building Code (EBC) was introduced by the New York City Council on June 11, 2025. Once effective, the Code will govern the alteration and maintenance of existing buildings.

IStructE’s 2025 Gold Medallist Glenn Bell to deliver lecture about learning from failures

The Institution of Structural Engineers’ (IStructE) 2025 Gold Medallist, Glenn Bell CEng FIStructE, will deliver his Gold Medal address on the 7 November 2025, titled Learning from Failures: From the Hyatt Regency Walkways to Champlain Towers South.

Glenn’s presentation will share his extensive insights from a career spanning five decades, drawing on his leadership of two high-profile investigations – the collapse of Hyatt Regency Walkways in July 1981 and the partial collapse of Champlain Towers South in June 2021.

Glenn is the co-lead on the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST), investigation into the Champlain Towers condominium incident, with its interim findings announced in June 2025.

The address promises to demonstrate a powerful perspective on the role of forensic engineering to shape a resilient built environment, exploring how studying structural failures can enhance design practice and improve public safety.

IStructE’s Gold Medal is awarded annually for outstanding contributions to the advancement of structural engineering. It was awarded to Glenn for his “significant contributions to structural engineering, particularly in the areas of building safety, standards development, and forensic investigations of catastrophic failures.”

Glenn’s biography

Glenn Bell spent 45 years at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger (SGH), where he engaged in the design, investigation and rehabilitation of building structures, building envelopes and other structures.
He was SGH’s CEO from 1995 through 2016 and its Board Chair from 2016 through 2018.
Glenn was Co-Founder of the ASCE Technical Council on Forensic Engineering (now the ASCE Forensic Engineering Division).
Glenn is Past President of SEI, a past Director of IStructE, and a Board Member of the Charles Pankow Foundation.

Request for Proposal: AISC Design Guide on Sustainability

AISC requests proposals for the development of a Design Guide on Sustainability as it relates to structural steel. All work is to be in accordance with the 2022 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, the 2022 AISC Seismic Provisions, the 16th Edition Steel Construction Manual, and all other current editions of other specifications and standards in place at the Commencement of Work. The design guide is to be written in such a manner that the content may be readily applied to design by the typical practicing structural engineer or architect. AISC Design Guides are typically 50 to 150 pages in length, yet the length should be commensurate with the scope of work, and provide information in a complete and concise manner. Given the scope of this design guide, AISC anticipates that the Principal Author or Project Director will form their own team of authors and assign sections appropriately. Design Guide Components Proposals should address all aspects of sustainable structural steel design in the United States, for use by architects, engineers, and other designers and their project teams. It should establish the best practices for sustainable design and construction in steel, and it should showcase how steel can be an ideal sustainable material. A summary of preliminary Design Guide discussions is provided below, with a detailed desired scope of work provided in Section C.

This presentation will discuss key measures needed to ensure the structural stability of existing parking structures. The course will cover data that is relevant to parking structures in New York City that led to the development of the new Code ad Rule. We will discuss different incidents that we are hoping to avoid by enacting these Code changes, and delve into some of the details of the pending rule and how one can become a Qualified Parking Structure Inspector (QPSI).

Participants will be able to identify the maintenance difficulties, inspection nuances, and the details of the code requirements for different types of parking structures. Lastly, we will discuss the new proposed rule for an early initial observation.

AISI Publishes New Research Report for Cold-Formed Steel Deck Applications

WASHINGTON, DC –The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has published a new research report, “RP23-02: Influence of Support Attachment Pattern on the Out-of-Plane Buckling Capacity of Steel Deck.” RP23-02 is available for free download in the AISI Design Resources section at www.buildusingsteel.org.

The research was undertaken to determine if the diaphragm testing used to develop AISI S310-20, North American Standard for the Design of Profiled Steel Diaphragm Panels, 2020 Edition, could be verified for new buckling limit states that will be required for higher-strength steel deck fasteners currently in development.

“This research provides more accurate predictions of strength and stiffness for higher-strength fasteners which will lead to more reliable and robust structures and more economical and sustainable design solutions for steel deck,” said Jay Larson, P.E., F.ASCE, managing director of AISI’s Construction Technical Program.

Larson noted that RP23-02 is the result of a project selected through AISI’s Small Project/Fellowship Program, which identifies and provides funding for research projects that will significantly impact the reliability, performance and cost-competitiveness of cold-formed steel in construction. The research is conducted by project teams which include a student, an academic advisor from the student’s academic institution and an industry advisor.

The RP23-02 project team included Divyansh R. Kapoor, graduate research assistant and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; Kara D. Peterman, associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; and Brian Bogh, industry advisor and senior research engineer at NUCOR/Vulcraft Group.

AI in the Structural Engineering Profession

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been selected as the topic for the 2023-2024 National Council of Structural Engineers (NCSEA) Innovation in Structural Engineering Grant. NCSEA is seeking individuals who are interested in helping develop an AI foundation for the structural engineering profession. The initiative aims to identify and support groundbreaking advancements in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) through the following objectives:

Provide Education: Provide structural engineers with information on the latest developments in AI as it relates to the profession and outline future areas of study in future areas surrounding this topic.
Foster Innovation: Encourage structural engineers to explore, develop, and implement innovative AI solutions that enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and longevity of structural engineering practices.
Promote Collaboration: Foster collaboration between structural engineers, AI experts, and other industry partners by encouraging the exchange of ideas and expertise to drive progress in the field.
Address Industry Challenges: Address key challenges faced by the structural engineering industry through the application of AI technologies, including ethical and legal areas.

This year's NCSEA Innovation in Structural Engineering Grant presents a unique opportunity for structural engineers to push the boundaries of their field by understanding and leveraging AI technologies. By providing financial support, technical guidance, and a platform for knowledge sharing, this year’s program aims to catalyze transformative advancements in the profession and foster collaboration within the structural engineering community and between industry partners.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

The Department of Buildings Emergency Management Unit in collaboration with FDNY Center for Terrorism and Disaster Preparedness (CTDP) will discuss and perform an annual training exercise to be in compliance with Executive Order #107. At this hands-on training, participants will:

Review fundamentals of mandated Continuity of Operation Program
Understand importance of continuity of governmental services in general
Performing Rapid and Detailed Damage Assessment utilizing nationally recognized ATC-45 form for possible voluntarily deployment within FEMA Region 2
Utilize latest technology for field survey and successful communication.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:

Participants arriving to Fort Totten Park will be greeted at the security gate by DOB personnel. Attendees are expected to arrive no later than 7:30 AM.
Do not cross main entrance security boot unless you were pre-authorized by
exercise planning team. If you are not sure about direction, if you accidently entered the park and unable to navigate to the right place, call DOB Chief Emergency Management Officer Dmitri Dits at 917-709-6186.
Private vehicles should be parked at the public parking lot located right outside Fort Totten Park main entrance/FDNY security boot. DOT mini vans will then transport exercise participants to the training facility.
Make sure to bring your hardhat and any type of governmental I.D. Adequate shoes are required. Your smart phone should be fully charged. You will need to have cash money in order to buy your food on premises.

Dear SEAoNY members and friends,

We would like to express our deepest sympathy and support for all the people affected by Hurricanes Ian and Fiona. Many people have been displaced, many lives affected and many homes and businesses damaged.

We have been monitoring the post-storm property damage situation to see if there are any requests for support in regard to building evaluations. At least one NYC DOB team has been sent to Puerto Rico. A general call for help has not been received by SEAoNY, nor NCSEA as of yet. This may change at any time.

We advise our members of the following: If you are interested in participating in any voluntary assistance or technical support, please find information on the SEAoNY SEER Committee page. They are in touch with the branches of government and volunteer organizations that will put out the official request for help.

Having our members volunteer for one of these deployments is one of SEAoNY's core values. At the same time, we want to keep our members safe. Showing up as an engineering volunteer in one of these stricken towns can be a logistical challenge for our members as well as a distraction or worse to overtaxed local coordinators. We are monitoring calls for help closely and will keep anyone interested updated as the situation unfolds. Notifications will be provided to those who are registered with the SEER Committee.

Are you looking for a hands-on event this SteelDay? Join Iron Works Local Union 40/361 and AISC for an event like no other.

You’ll experience a variety of different training stations that will allow you to experience what an ironworker does on a daily basis on a jobsite. You’ll have the opportunity to weld, flame-cut, rig a beam, or climb a column--plus, you’ll learn how to make the most of IMPACT and AISC resources on your next project. The tour will take roughly two hours. Bring PPE if you have it (or we’ll have some you can borrow) and be sure to wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes (or boots if you have them). This October 21-23 marks the 20th anniversary of OHNY Weekend. More than 250 buildings, projects, and public spaces—from workspaces and cultural venues to private residences and infrastructure facilities— will open up for FREE tours, talks and other formats for both in-person and virtual explorations. Key locations and experiences to get excited about this year include the Sandy +10 Living Breakwaters Boat Tour with SCAPE, a lighting tour of The New York Times Building with OVI Lighting for OHNY @ Night, a guided historical tour of the stunning Rapp & Rapp Kings Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn, inside look at the architectural highlights of The Eldridge Street Synagogue, and so much more.

The full OHNY Weekend lineup will be released to the public on October 6 via ohny.org/weekend. A new lottery system will be introduced this year, with the goal of leveling the playing field on our advance registration experiences. AISI PUBLISHES SUPPLEMENT NO. 3 TO AISI S100-16 (R2020)

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has published Supplement No. 3 to AISI S100-16 (Reaffirmed 2020), North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, 2022 Edition. The North American Specification harmonizes cold-formed steel design technology across the United States, Canada and Mexico, allowing for faster introduction of new technologies as well as opening up the market for a variety of derivative products such as design aids and educational materials.

Supplement No. 3 includes changes and additions approved by AISI’s Committee on Specifications since 2016, including those changes published in Supplements 1 and 2. Significant updates are made in Chapters E through J. A detailed list of changes can be found in the Preface.

Supplement No. 3 can be downloaded free of charge at www.aisistandards.org as: 1) a stand-alone document, or 2) incorporated into the 2016 edition of the North American Specification. It can be found in the section titled “AISI Standards 2020-22 Editions.”

AISI Standards Council Seeks Proposals for Small Projects and Fellowships to be Awarded in 2023

SMALL PROJECTS AND FELLOWSHIPS TO BE AWARDED IN 2023

Proposals must be submitted to AISI by October 15, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Standards Council is seeking research proposals for its 2023 Small Project/Fellowship Program. Launched in 2014, AISI’s Small Project/Fellowship Program identifies and provides funding for research projects that will significantly impact the reliability, performance and cost-competitiveness of cold-formed steel (CFS) products. The program provides a streamlined mechanism for AISI’s standards development committees (the Committee on Specifications and the Committee on Framing Standards), industry stakeholders, academics and students to collaborate on relatively short-term, highly focused and mutually beneficial projects.

The small project and fellowship requests should be developed and submitted by a project team that includes a student (if known at the time of submittal), an academic advisor from the student’s academic institution and an industry advisor. Either the academic advisor or industry advisor must be a member of the relevant AISI standards developing committee. Project selections are based on several factors, including: 1) the potential for long-term impact on the industry, 2) steel industry engagement and co-funding, and 3) results for the AISI standards development committees, the student, and the academic institution.

AISI funding is limited to $10,000 on small projects, which include stated deliverables; and $6,000 on individual fellowships, which do not include overhead expenses. AISI anticipates funding three to six projects in 2023. Project ideas may be generated by the AISI standards developing committee, industry advisor, academic advisor or student. A list of potential project ideas is available from Helen Chen, manager of AISI Construction Standards Development, who can be reached at hchen@steel.org.

Proposals for the 2023 Small Project/Fellowship Program are due to AISI by October 15, 2022. Requests should be submitted via e-mail to Jay Larson, secretary of the AISI Standards Council, at jlarson@steel.org. Winning projects will be determined and announced by the AISI Standards Council by January 15, 2023.

AISI’s Standards Council initiates cold-formed steel standards development projects and maintains accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). AISI has a long history of supporting academic research in pursuit of its standards development objectives. These efforts have generally been driven by the AISI standards developing committees and focused on stakeholder objectives. AISI understands that the effective engagement of academics and students is mutually beneficial and often yields maximum benefits for the industry.

In 2014 the Harvard Business Review published a ranking of innovation by industry and it was no surprise to see our industry dead last. It’s no wonder that in the last few years we have seen outsized interest in our industry from the venture capital community—we might be the last, stubborn frontier of global proportions. Everywhere you turn you bump into ConTech and PropTech and the promise (or threat, if you shy from opportunity) of AI and MI. The world has finally caught on. But to understand where we’re going, it helps to look at how we got here. What does all this mean for the future of structural engineering, as a practice and as a career? Here are reflections of a 40-year engineering career, and why I wish I were 25 years old again.

About the speaker: Thomas Z. Scarangello has more than 40 years of experience leading the structural engineering and analysis of a wide variety of building types worldwide, from long-span sports and entertainment venues to high-rise commercial and mixed-use buildings. With the 2015 merger with Weidlinger Associates, Tom expanded the firm’s service offerings to include transportation, protective design and security, and applied sciences. He is co-chair of the New York Building Congress Council on Innovation and Best Practices and the NYBC Ascend conference. He is also active in evaluating and promoting innovative AEC technology, serving as chair of TTWiiN, an innovation accelerator that commercializes technology spun off from Thornton Tomasetti incubators, as well as driving industry innovation as a member of the BuiltWorlds’ Corporate Venture Forum and as a founding member of AEC Angels.

Program Description: Structural engineers practicing in New York also often design projects located elsewhere and must learn to deal with a variety of environmental load scenarios, some of which involve ongoing evaluation of the effects of climate change. With this variety comes the need to anticipate uncommon design events and develop approaches to deal with unconventional structural demands. This year's topic will highlight the increased performance expectations we ask of our built environment, unusual design scenarios, both in New York City and across the country.

Call for submissions: 2021 "Hack the Building Code"

The 2021 "Hack the Building Code" Innovation Challenge has officially kicked off, and submissions are now being accepted from the public on ways to improve the ways we design, construct and maintain our city of over 1.1 million buildings.

The challenge is an open call to startups, industry professionals, and the public, looking for the best ideas on how we can make our city's buildings and construction sites safer, more efficient, more resilient, and more sustainable.

The application deadline for submissions is November 3rd, 2021.

Last year's winners from our 2020 "Hack The Building Code" Challenge and our Carbon Neutrality Innovation Challenge included a wide range of ideas to improve our city's built environment which were showcased at our digital industry conferences. DOB also issued Buildings Bulletins in support of these innovators, official guidance documents which provide technical approvals for the use of products, processes and technologies that are not specifically enumerated in our Codes.

Recognizing the Contributions of Structural Engineers in the Days, Months, and Years After 9/11

As it is for many, September 11 is a day of remembrance and reflection for the structural engineering community. We remember the tragedy of that day, and how, in the face of that tragedy, people came together to help in the response and recovery efforts. The National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) send our thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of all the victims of the tragedy that took place 20 years ago, as well as our appreciation and gratitude to all of those who came together to help the search, rescue, and recovery efforts.

First responders searched the debris at ground zero to look for survivors and attend to the wounded. Structural engineers were right alongside them, helping to ensure that the debris field and surrounding structures they were entering were safe. Many of these structural engineers were affiliated with SEAoNY or other member organizations of NCSEA. Approximately 450 structural engineers worked shifts with first responders and contractors to evaluate the condition of approximately 400 buildings surrounding the World Trade Center site to ensure that they were safe to re-occupy.

“Personally, I would like to thank all of those volunteers again for their dedication and effort during that difficult time for all of us,” says Edward M. DePaola, P.E., SECB, F.SEI, and SEAoNY President during 9/11. “At the time, we were amazed at the response of the structural engineering community, and I’m still amazed and proud when I think about what we did.”

Over the 20 years since that fateful day, structural engineers have played an instrumental role in the disaster investigations and in the development of changes to building codes and construction practices resulting from those investigations. In addition, structural engineers have developed and implemented enhanced disaster response measures at both the local and national levels that better position structural engineers for rapid deployment in a time of need. In particular, the Structural Engineering Emergency Response (SEER) program promotes expeditious post-disaster recovery of communities through building safety evaluations and has been activated for numerous natural disasters around the country since 9/11.

The lessons learned from 9/11 serve as the foundation for substantive changes to how high-rise buildings are engineered as well as a decisive path toward more safe and resilient communities.

“As we reflect on the events of that tragic day, we feel fortunate that our education and training as structural engineers prepared us well to assist in the recovery,” says NCSEA President Ed Quesenberry, P.E., S.E. “We are resolute in our commitment to doing whatever we can to ensure that the buildings we live and work in are safe and to being ready to respond when our communities need us.”

This webinar series will provide an overview of the Design Guide on the ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete as well information on the major changes that occurred from the 2014 to the 2019 edition of ACI 318. The purpose of the Design Guide is to assist in the proper application of the provisions in the 2019 edition of Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-19) for cast-in-place concrete buildings with nonprestressed reinforcement. Two-hour live presentations will take place on June 23, June 30, July 7, and July 14; a recording of each session will be made available to event registrants. AIA's Code of Ethics includes as one of its standards, that “Members should provide their colleagues and employees with a fair and equitable working environment, compensate them fairly, and facilitate their professional development.” The rule of conduct that follows states: “Members shall treat their colleagues and employees with mutual respect and provide an equitable working environment.”

Architecture as a profession has historically struggled with issues of representation and career advancement for women and BIPOC individuals. AIA has created the Guides for Equitable Practice (“the Guides”) to respond to many of these issues and provide a framework “to overcome inequities and help advance the profession, the careers of individual architects, and the quality of the built environment by creating more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplaces and interactions.” Architects should work to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of those in their workplaces, as well as those in the communities they serve. These tenets go hand in hand as a more diverse and equitable workforce is more likely to be aware of and address the intersectional issues that continue to plague our society. Using the Guides and additional resources, this three-part course will serve as a primer to provide data and research to build a case for equitable practice in the field of architecture. Architects and design professionals are encouraged to attend if they want to develop a foundational awareness of core topics that impact equity, diversity, and inclusion in their workplaces and suggest methods to begin to address them.

Since 2005, the Foundation has distributed over $210,000 to graduating high school students from the Urban Assembly School for Design and Construction in Manhattan and college and university students enrolled in various institutions across the greater New York City area. Historically, the Foundation has provided 2 scholarships at the high school level and 2 scholarships at the university or graduate level.

Due to the unprecedented challenges faced by students in light of the pandemic, this year the SEAoNY Education Foundation hopes to give more than ever before: awarding 3 scholarships at the $5,000 level to graduating Urban Assembly high school seniors, and 2 to current college students.

IABSE presents Future of Design NYC for the fourth time in September 2020. Join us for a series of events dedicated to synthesizing new ideas and discussing active issues in the engineering and architecture community!

The theme of Future of Design NYC 2020 is Acceleration & Deceleration. Designers and related built environment professionals are often caught between the fast-paced flexibility that a project demands and the slow pace of change of industry practices. This year’s program will evaluate the effects of acceleration on the built environment and on designing with social responsibility; it will also explore ideas and innovative practices that developed as a result of - or in an attempt to better harness - those shifts. It will approach these issues from perspectives of both engineering and architecture, in order to contextualize designers’ voices in transformative built environment initiatives.

A Message to Our Membership

A Message from the SEAoNY Board:

We are writing to address the recent events surrounding the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and racism in the United States. We have been grieving along with the rest of New York and are deeply saddened and outraged by the continuing violence against the Black community. Our role as structural engineers is to build a better present and future for the communities we serve. We know that silence at this time is not an option, and want to reaffirm our support for our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) members.

We are an anti-racist organization; discrimination of any kind is not aligned with the values of SEAoNY or our Code of Ethics. The NCSEA’s vision statement reads, “Structural Engineers are valued for their contributions to safe structures and resilient communities.” Communities will be neither safe nor resilient until we fully address the challenges we face as a society, including racism and educational inequity. While we as structural engineers cannot solve these problems on our own, it is vital that we do the work necessary, as firms, engineers, and individuals, in order to make the best decisions and actions to find solutions.

The SEAoNY Board supports our committees who have been taking action on the issues of inequality and diversity.

The SEAoNY Education Foundation has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to students from the Urban Assembly School for Design and Construction and grants to fund a new laboratory on campus.

The Diversity committee has invited experts to present to our membership on relevant issues such as understanding implicit bias, best practices for addressing workplace harassment, the NCSEA SE3 Project, among other topics. Diversity has also begun an annual speed mentoring initiative designed to give all members of our field access to a diverse set of mentors at all levels of experience.

The Student Outreach Committee (formerly Education Committee) has engaged in important outreach to local high school and college students who are the future of a more inclusive structural engineering community. Moving forward, we are talking to our various partners in these efforts to increase their impact and ensure the benefits are reaching those who are most in need.

Although we have taken steps towards addressing racism against our BIPOC colleagues, the SEAoNY Board acknowledges that we have been largely silent on the subject. We have not contributed enough to the ongoing conversation of racism in the United States.

Compelled by recent events, the SEAoNY Diversity committee will not take hiatus this summer as usual and will instead host a 3-part virtual seminar series addressing racism within the structural engineering profession. The first two seminars in this series are designed to educate our membership on the effects of racism against BIPOC and particularly how the built environment can influence injustice and inequality in our society. The third seminar will be a panel discussion on actionable steps that firms can take internally and externally to address racism and implicit bias in the workplace. Please look for further communications on this seminar series in the weeks to come.

We encourage our membership to be advocates for the health, safety, and well-being of the public and we encourage you to continue engaging the SEAoNY Board and one another in conversation on how to do so. We will be listening to our members as we evaluate future meaningful actions that can be taken by SEAoNY to advocate for a more equitable profession.

This seminar will discuss the basic outline of the dynamic movement of built structures, the application of system theory to these structures, and the assessment of the health of a structure using dynamic movement. Such measurements contain very useful information, including the identification of areas of lower strength within a structure. This seminar will also discuss the use of baseline movement measurements as a reference with which to compare movement response after an event, such as an earthquake, or to compare with the requirements of relevant codes of practice.

About the Speaker

Dr. Alan Jeary has over 35 years of experience in the management and performance of investigation services, structural engineering services and wind engineering for a broad range of critical infrastructure projects throughout the world. His many professional highlights include the Telford Gold Medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers, United Kingdom in 1981. Dr. Jeary holds two doctorates and has published over 200 papers on the instrumentation of structures to study their dynamic characteristics. Dr. Jeary helped establish the Australia, Hong Kong and new Euro-codes for wind and he has served on numerous engineering committees. EVENT OVERVIEW

The MA AEER Task Force is pleased to offer a full-day training on the methods of assessment of the safety and usability of buildings after natural and man-made disasters.

Based on the Applied Technology Council's well-accepted post-disaster methodologies and documentation guidelines ATC-20 and ATC-45 (for earthquake and wind/flood events, respectively), this SAP training course will provide engineers, architects and code-enforcement professionals with an understanding of the basic skills required to perform safety assessments of structures following disasters.

Professional Architects, Engineers, and Building Inspectors will become certified to assist local governments and perform safety evaluations of the built environment in the aftermath of a natural or man-made disaster. Upon completion of this training, participants will be certified to perform post-disaster assessments and will receive a nationally-recognized Cal OES SAP registration ID card from the state of CA. (Valid license numbers will be required for this certification.)

Case studies will be presented and discussed to illustrate examples of possible damage scenarios that a Second Responder could encounter and how to properly assess the damage and record it for later use by emergency management personnel. Attendees will be introduced to the FEMA Incident & Command requirements and protocols for responders operating in a post-disaster theater which will prepare them to take the self-study online courses required of Second Responders in most jurisdictions who wish to perform post-disaster assessments.

Van Bui, PhD at University of Wollongong, Australia and Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, has been working as Senior Scientist at BASF Corporation since 2005.

He has experience of over 35 years in concrete, concrete material and admixture technologies, served as Quality Assurance Manager, Project Manager, Researcher and Engineer/Consultant in both industrial firms and research institutions in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific region.

Van Bui is a renowned expert on concrete mixture optimization and effectively helped hundred customers in ready mixed and precast/prestressed concrete industry in gaining and implementing successfully a number of projects, including some high-profile projects such as New World Trade Center in New York, residential super-high rise building at 432 Park Avenue, New York city, Trump Tower in Chicago and Underwater SCC for casino structure in Mississippi, Architectural Concrete at Cathedral of Chris the Light, Sacramento City Hall, Stanford University Recreation Center, etc.

He is an Internationally renowned expert with 25-year-plus experience in technologies of Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC), High-Performance Sustainable Concrete and Fiber-Reinforced Concrete.

Van Bui is also a Fellow of ACI (FACI) and member of several technical committees of American Concrete Institute, ASTM and RILEM, author/co-author of over 50 papers and technical documents and Invited Speaker for Seminar/Short Course at Universities. IABSE Future of Design NYC is an annual symposium to energize and provoke discussion in our community encompassing the architecture, engineering, design, and construction industry. The symposium is interactive and broad in its reach, aiming to maximize exchange of innovative ideas through a forum for education and dialogue.

Future of Design NYC’s theme in 2019 is For the People. As a response to the growing desire for design-based action to improve life in the public and social sphere, program sessions examine the collective role of built environment professionals in today’s social, environmental, economic, and political climate. Conversations also look inward at to understand the sustainability and equitability of the industry’s work, and how to empower future engineers to take on a greater voice in built environment initiatives.

The program features presentations and panels that provide critical discussion of local and international projects, as well as debate on approaches that underpin structural engineering and architectural design. Emerging and established voices involved in the creation of the future built environment will provide both technical and qualitative insights on different facets of the theme.

The Civil Engineering community is advancing the use of LIDAR and structure-from-motion (SFM) 3D topographic models for understanding the geometry of complex structural and earth deformations and has greatly benefited from these tools. For civil engineering deformation research, LIDAR & SFM are particularly useful for characterizing the dimensions of failures and for monitoring subtle deformation through time. This presentation will present the two technologies and an evaluation of the accuracy, bias, and dispersion of 3D data under controlled experimental conditions. Examples are given from recent field studies using LIDAR and SFM visualization and analysis from some recent extreme-events investigated by the National Science Foundation-funded GEER association. Ultra-high resolution imagery of complex surfaces allows the exploration and visualization of damage in orientations and scales not previously possible. Detailed understanding of the surface morphology allows for better numerical modeling of potential failure modes, deformation patterns, and morphologies. Finally, LIDAR and SFM technology provides for the permanent archiving of 3-D terrain.

Speaker: Tracy D. Marcotte, PhD, PE, FACI expert and licensed professional engineer in metallurgical and materials engineering.

Dr. Marcotte is a professional engineer, previous chair of ACI 365 – Service Life Prediction, a member of multiple ACI committees related to corrosion, durability, sustainability, service life, and repair, serves on ACI’s Technical Activities Committee, and was appointed to ACI’s Board of Direction in 2017.

Tracy graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston and the University of Waterloo, Canada, with degrees in Materials Science & Metallurgical Engineering, focused on steel corrosion in concrete. She has committed her professional life to developing standards and improving planning guides for the effective management of structures in service, and firmly believes this work will increase the quality of life within developing and developed nations. Internationally, she is a United States delegate working with other delegates from 94 countries to develop international standards for concrete repair within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO TC 71). She actively promotes forensics, repair, and maintenance of structures as highly satisfying and worthwhile profession for engineers, architects, and historic preservationists.

Architectural and engineering firms, structural steel companies, general contractors and owners are encouraged to enter steel-framed building projects in the competition. Conducted annually by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), this awards program recognizes excellence and innovation in the use of structural steel on building projects across the country. The award is the highest honor bestowed on building projects by the U.S. structural steel industry.

"The IDEAS2 Awards is how we recognize the innovative and progressive ways that you use the versatility, utility and beauty of structural steel in your projects," said Charles J. SEAoNY 2019 Honorary Member Guy Nordenson

Guy Nordenson is a practicing structural engineer, teacher and writer, and is active in coastal adaptation research and design. His research project and book On the Water | Palisade Bay (Hatje Cantz 2010) won the 2007 American Institute of Architects Latrobe Research Prize, and served as the basis for the 2010 Museum of Modern Art workshop and exhibition “Rising Currents.” With his firm Guy Nordenson and Associates, he was the engineer for the 2004 MoMA expansion in New York, the Fort Worth Kimbell Art Museum expansion, the National Museum of African American History and Culture superstructure in Washington DC, the Jubilee Church in Rome and over 200 other buildings. He was Commissioner and Secretary of the NYC Public Design Commission from 2006 to 2015 and is a member of the NYC Panel on Climate Change. His books also include Seven Structural Engineers (MoMA 2008), and Patterns and Structure and Reading Structures (Lars Muller, 2010 and 2016). In 2013 his team at Princeton was awarded a major grant by the Rockefeller Foundation to develop “Structures of Coastal Resilience” in collaboration with the US Army Corps of Engineers and teams from Harvard, City College of New York, and the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught at Columbia and MIT, and since 1995, is a professor of architecture and engineering at Princeton.

Englewood Cliffs, NJ, May 3, 2018—Those Amazing Professions Inc. (TAP) announces the launch of www.thoseamazingengineers.com, a website to inform young people about careers in engineering through real life examples of what engineers do and where they work. The site, particularly appropriate for middle school students who are at an age when they begin to think about careers, can be used with students in upper elementary and high school as well. The publicly available site was developed with a lead grant from The Thornton Tomasetti Foundation and with matching funds from The National Academy of Construction, the New York Building Foundation, and the Structural Engineers Association of New York.

The site will help students understand how their classroom science, technology, engineering and math programs (STEM) are relevant to actual career options that can help change the world. Information and video links illustrate the variety of engineering disciplines and professional opportunities, examples of places to work, and ideas on how to get started, as well as some of the latest and most innovative work being done by engineers today. Trilogy has donated the books and the copyright of Those Amazing Engineers to TAP. Rose Reichman, Executive Director of TAP, states “The digital version of Those Amazing Engineers builds on the success of the book and makes the content free to users and universally accessible. It also allows TAP to easily update and adapt the material in response to teacher and student feedback.”

Those Amazing Professions Inc. (TAP) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 whose mission is to educate young people about careers in underserved professions. The engineering website is its first initiative. WASHINGTON, D.C., October 3, 2017—The Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) will host a webinar on “The Structural Aspect of Interior Nonstructural Cold-Formed Steel Framing” on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. ET. The webinar is designed for architects, engineers, building officials and contractors. Participants are eligible for 1.5 PDHs.

The webinar will review various interior nonstructural cold-formed steel framing for code-specified and engineered applications. Often, interior applications beyond ASTM installation standards are not thoroughly addressed in project contract documents. This webinar will assist building design professionals by highlighting code and industry standard limitations and illustrating which ones do not require analysis and which ones require additional engineering to determine proper member sizes and installation. The webinar will cover several topics, including:

Winning design team to construct an architectural pavilion out of recycled aluminum cast into cracked clay for Governors Island 2017 Summer Season

A distinguished jury has selected the winning design in the seventh annual City of Dreams Pavilion Competition: Cast & Place by Team Aesop (Josh Draper from PrePost/RPI-CASE, Lisa Ramsburg and Powell Draper from Schlaich Bergermann Partner, Edward M. Segal from Hofstra University, and Max Dowd from Cooper Union). Pending approvals and fundraising, this temporary art structure will be assembled on Governors Island and open to the public for the summer 2017 season.

The annual competition is hosted by FIGMENT, the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY). The City of Dreams Pavilion, so named for its focus on the future of a world that faces strains on both economic and natural resources, aims to promote sustainability-oriented thinking amidst the architecture and design communities, and requires designers to consider the environmental impact of their designs in everything from materials sourcing to disposal (or ideally reuse) of waste at the end of the season.

Cast & Place re-imagines waste as a transformative resource for our New York City future. Soil dredged from the East River, the material also used in the construction of Governors Island, is laid out to dry and crack. 250,000 aluminum cans are melted down and poured into the cracked dredge. The results are light, strong panels that provide structure and shade, assembled into spaces for performance and play. Rain-soaked reflecting pools of dredge reveal the pavilion’s formwork as they dry and crack in the summer heat, inducing meditations on time, materiality, and the sources of our city.

Cast & Place by Team Aesop (Josh Draper, Lisa Ramsburg, Powell Draper, Edward M. Segal, and Max Dowd)

Team Aesop will work with FIGMENT, ENYA, SEAoNY, and Governors Island to select the exact site for Cast & Place, refine the design, obtain necessary approvals, and fabricate and install the pavilion on the island.

The project has launched a Kickstarter campaign to support the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of the pavilion on Governors Island for the 2017 summer season. Donations can be made by clicking here.

Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) is working to better represent all of the Structural Engineers throughout the state of New York. This year we plan to start by beginning a new chapter in Syracuse, New York.

Our goal is to introduce our organization to upstate professionals in order to advance the profession and foster forums that allow professionals to meet and exchange ideas and experiences. This will be facilitated through seminar events as well as opportunities to participate in various SEAoNY committee discussions, including but not limited to, codes & standards, future seminars and promotion of diversity in the field of structural engineering.

All the Tall Buildings in Manhattan, 1874-1900

In conjunction with its current exhibition TEN & TALLER, 1874-1900, The Skyscraper Museum presents symposium that explores new narratives of the first decades of high-rise history. Organized into four sessions, on Thursday evening, March 9 and on Friday morning and afternoon, March 10, the symposium brings together a range of scholars and authors who have studied nineteenth-century New York from the perspectives of architecture, engineering, and urban history.

New York’s first “skyscrapers” were erected in 1874, initiating the city’s ascent into the vertical. The all-masonry Tribune and Western Union buildings were ten-story office buildings that lifted their decorative towers to 260 and 230 feet. By 1900, the steel skeleton of the 30-story Park Row Building – tallest in the world–topped out at 391 feet.

In the last quarter of the 19th century, Manhattan added 250 buildings of ten or more stories – more than triple the number of Chicago. Elevators and new methods of construction enabled this rise, but it was the phenomenal growth of the city itself, whose population swelled from less than a million in the 1870s to more than 3.4 million in 1900, that drove New York into its vertical expansion.

In particular, the symposium will explore a new narrative of “All vs. Tall” that considers other uses beyond office buildings, including apartments, hotels, and lofts, and emphasizes the commercial motive of high-rise development. The comprehensive survey of every building in Manhattan of 10 or more stories from 1874 through 1900 that is the subject of the TEN & TALLER exhibition and the three interfaces – the GRID, the MAP, and the TIMELINE – offer new ways of viewing the architectural and urban development of the period that will be a focus of our symposium.

Most specifications require a ready mix truck to discharge the concrete within 90 minutes after the

cement had been mixed with water. This requirement is given in ASTM C-94, the standard for ready mix concrete.

This standard has existed for over 30 years. Concrete technology has changed significantly over these years.

The cement of today is not the cement we had 30 years ago. Today, we have admixtures that can delay the

cement hydration process for hours, and we have admixtures that can extend the desired slump life of a concrete mix.

The issue of how much time should be allowed to discharge a truck is not a simple answer, like 90 minutes.

This seminar will present:

 The latest in concrete technology to extend the working time for a concrete mix;

 Test data on plastic and hardened concrete that was not discharged in 90 minutes;

 What others are specifying as a required time or criteria to discharge concrete.

We have all been involved with good and bad projects. One of the key differentiators between successful and unsuccessful jobs is the communication and collaboration (or lack thereof) between the engineer, contractor and other team members. This live presentation will discuss a number of items that can effect budget, schedule, quality and the safety performance of a project. The end game is to have a satisfied owner that would like to use the same project team on the next job.

The earlier the contractor is involved in the design process the more impact he can have on the project cost curve. It is imperative that the expectations of all parties are identified early and hopefully there is congruency. How do we balance the issue of design optimization versus constructability. Constructability ultimately impacts the schedule and budget. How are the tolerance interfaces between various trades (elevators, curtain wall, floor coverings) discussed before they become an issue? We will discuss the importance of a pre-construction conference that is an open discussion of the potential issues. We will look at case histories where collaboration has helped to guarantee project success.

Mike Schneider is a veteran of the concrete industry. He started with Baker Concrete Construction (Monroe, Ohio) as a Project Manager in 1978, and is currently Sr. Vice President/Chief People Officer. He also serves as the company champion of Baker’s Incident & Injury Free (IIF) Program and is responsible for safety within Baker on a Global basis. Mike has been a member of ACI since 1981 and currently serves as ACI President. He’s also an active member and past President of ASCC (American Society of Concrete Contractors). Ecuador GEER Reconnaissance Report

The Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, in collaboration with the Applied Technology Council (ATC) has released a report on the reconnaissance findings of the April 2016 M_w7.8 Muisne, Ecuador earthquake, available here.

The event and report were co-led by SEAoNY members S. Nikolaou and R. Gilsanz with participation from other SEAoNY Members from GMS and WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff.

The event and its aftershocks led to hundreds of fatalities, thousands of injuries, tens of thousands of people homeless, serious damage and collapses to buildings and infrastructure, and economic impact estimated at 3% of the national GDP. The performance of the natural and built environment was documented in the geotechnical, structural and nonstructural aspects by the GEER-ATC reconnaissance team that visited the most affected areas. The reconnaissance has yielded datasets, lessons, and suggestions for future research on:
(i) seismological and recorded strong ground motions;
(ii) application of US rapid assessment methods;
(iii) geotechnical and infrastructure performance;
(iv) site amplification and liquefaction;
(v) structural and nonstructural effects and correlation to geotechnical effects;
(vi) critical facilities and seismically-isolated structures response;
(vii) use of advanced 3-D technologies to map drone and photo observations;
(viii) case histories documentation of successful behavior in addition to failures; and
(ix) community/government response and awareness aspects.

WoodWorks, an educational initiative that provides free technical support and resources related to the design and construction of non-residential and multi-family wood buildings, is now accepting nominations for its 2017 U.S. Wood Design Awards.

The awards recognize excellence in wood design, engineering, and construction, as well as innovative projects that showcase attributes of wood such as strength, beauty, versatility, cost effectiveness, and sustainability.

The deadline for nominations is September 30, 2016.

As examples of successful tall wood buildings proliferate worldwide, many architects are considering how to leverage wood’s sustainability and other advantages through their own tall wood designs. Intended as a practical overview for those interested in pursuing wood’s potential, this presentation will cover the “who, what, when and where” of tall mass timber buildings. Following a brief discussion of history and motivators, existing tall wood projects will be used to illustrate mass timber and hybrid components, high-rise structural design concepts, and lessons learned regarding cost and schedule. Topics will also include building code avenues for alternate designs, and available resources and support. Finally, the project architect of 475 West 18th, a proposed 10-story mass timber building in New York City currently in design—and east coast winner of the U.S. Tall Wood Building Prize Competition—will share insights regarding the design process. Discussion will include economic and sustainability impacts, approval and testing, design considerations, and challenges associated with high-rise residential typology.

Marc Rivard, PE, SE, New England Regional Director, Woodworks

Marc is a licensed Structural and Professional Engineer in the State of California, and received his BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Prior to joining WoodWorks, he was a Senior Structural Engineer in California with 13 years of experience primarily involving seismic design and analysis of new and existing buildings. Marc has experience providing structural calculations, plans, specifications and construction administration services for a wide variety of projects including public schools and libraries, churches, state park facilities, multi-family and single family custom homes, universities, commercial and retail buildings, NASA operational facilities, and military housing and operational facilities.

Amir Shahrokhi, LEED AP, SHoP Architects

Amir is a Project Director at SHoP Architects with eight years of diverse architectural experience leading design teams on complex urban sites, large mixed-use projects, and innovative structures. He understands that inventive and meaningful work requires a particular ability to understand and satisfy the goals of various stakeholders in order to create memorable spaces and experiences that impact the lives of those who inhabit them. He has worked at a variety of scales ranging from intimate galleries to multi-block urban projects involving multiple city agencies and transit authorities. Simultaneously, the New York City metro area has been generating far more post-consumer glass than recyclers have a consistent end market use for. In an effort to address these dual challenges, pragmatic thought leaders brought key stakeholders from multiple industry sectors together to collaborate on a solution. Team members worked together over the course of 18 months to begin piloting use of locally recycled ground glass as an ingredient in high-performing concrete with reduced environmental impact.

Over the past decade, architects and engineers have continued this long tradition of structural innovation, using new materials and technologies to design and build a new generation of New York icons that advance the art of engineering while enriching the city's built environment.

During this year's OHNY Weekend, Open House New York and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) partner to open a selection of recent projects that illustrate the state of the art of structural engineering in New York City. In their quest to meet deadlines, architects do not get much opportunity to play at design. The Center for Architecture and LEGO invite young professionals for "Bricks and Beverages," a fun and lively game night that will rekindle our participants' love of LEGOs while enjoying a night out among friends and colleagues.

"Bricks and Beverages" will consist of a LEGO build competition with three architectural challenges. Participants in teams (1-5 people per team) will randomly draw a building type (museum, stadium, theater) and styles (Chicago School, Brutalist, Gothic) from a hat to create a wacky design mandate. A LEGO prize will be awarded to the best team, selected by a panel of judges.

Wine, beer, snacks, and a custom, LEGO-inspired cocktail will be served.

D.O.B PRESS RELEASE: Department of Buildings Transformative Blueprint for Change announced by Commissioner Rick Chandler

NYC Department of Buildings Commissioner Rick Chandler today announced a new plan(PDF) that will fundamentally reform the agency to enhance public and worksite safety, slash wait times and delays, and modernize all aspects of the agency to meet the needs of a 21st century city.

The Department of Buildings is responsible for enforcing the New York City Construction Codes and Zoning Resolution on more than a million buildings and construction sites throughout the City. Issuing a record 140,000 construction permits in 2014, the daily operations of the Department impact the everyday lives of those that live, work and build in New York City.

Earlier this year, Mayor de Blasio announced the beginnings of “fundamental reform” at the Department of Buildings, and today’s action plan delivers on that pledge. With an unprecedented infusion of new resources, including 320 new positions and $120 million over four years, and significant reforms to internal processes and public interactions, the City of New York will ensure its Department of Buildings is second to none in customer service, public safety and efficient oversight.

A Member is defined as one who has received a BS or higher degree in engineering from an accredited university, is actively engaged in the practice of Structural Engineering as their primary profession, and is licensed by the State of New York as a Professional Engineer.

Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats 2015 Conference

Conference Synopsis: After a post-recession hiatus in tall building construction in many countries lasting several years, numerous cities in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Australia are again resurgent. From Miami to Melbourne, Bogota to Beijing, Toronto to Turin, tall projects are being proposed and built in significant number. Nowhere is this more evident than in New York, where several new urban typologies are developing simultaneously; the ultra skinny, luxury residential towers exemplified by One57 and 432 Park; the urban-regeneration clusters such as Hudson Yards and the World Trade Center site; the prefabricated high rise and other technical innovations as seen at Pacific Park; as well as numerous others. In addition, the increasing importance of both resilient infrastructure in the face of mounting climate change, as well as quality public space exemplified through projects such as the High Line, are adding to a fascinating mix.

Yet the flow of capital enabling many of these projects is complex, and shows an interconnectedness of our cities way beyond what was evident even just a short decade or two before. Developments in Sydney are as likely to be driven by forces from Shanghai as locally, Canadian pension funds are enabling several tall buildings in London, and Middle East capital seems, once again, to be everywhere. On top of this, after a decade or more of unprecedented vertical growth in Chinese cities, China is now investing in myriad urban centers around the world.

The CTBUH will thus bring its 2015 Conference to the evolving high rise tapestry that is New York to examine this dual phenomena – the motivations and mechanisms that are enabling multi-national investment scenarios, and the technical innovations that are driving new heights, forms, materials and construction techniques. FIGMENT Pavillion Fundraising

FIGMENT, the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) are pleased to announce that a distinguished jury has selected two winning designs in the fifth annual City of Dreams Pavilion Competition: Billion Oyster Pavilion by BanG Studio of New York City and Organic Growth by Izaskun Chinchilla Architects of Madrid and London. Pending approvals and fundraising, these pavilions will both be assembled on Governors Island and open to the public for the summer 2015 season.

After a four-hour-long deliberation, the jury was deadlocked in deciding between the Billion Oyster Pavilion and Organic Growth Pavilion. The Billion Oyster Pavilion is grounded in local history, tapping into discussions around resiliency and the long-term benefits of growing new oyster beds in New York Harbor. Organic Growth Pavilion brings attention to the large amount of waste in our landfills by repurposing a smorgasbord of parts and pieces from discarded trash.

It wasn't until the jury began debating the suggestion to build two pavilions that the merits of building both outweighed the selection of just one. Given that collaboration and experimentation are part of what FIGMENT is all about, and the premise of this competition that architecture has the ability to reach and involve the public in new ways, the jury agreed that the two pavilion designs would enhance each other and strengthen the competition overall.

Now that the winners have been announced, the design teams will work with FIGMENT, ENYA, SEAoNY, and Governors Island to select the final site for the projects, refine the designs, obtain necessary approvals, and fabricate and install the pavilions on the island.

Building two pavilions rather than one, however, does increase the amount of support required. FIGMENT is accepting tax-deductible donations to support the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of these two pavilions on Governors Island for the 2015 summer season.

2015 EERI Annual Meeting in Boston March 31-April 3

The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) will hold its 67th Annual Meeting in Boston, MA on March 31-April 3, 2015. The theme for the meeting is "Old Cities, New Earthquakes," and the program will highlight the particular seismic hazards and vulnerability of older structures common to so much of central and eastern North America.

Robert Olshansky, Head at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will deliver the EERI Distinguished Lecture on improving earthquake mitigation and recovery efforts over time. Paul Somerville will give the William B. Joyner Memorial Lecture, Geoscientists’ Capacity to Supply Engineers’ Demands for Seismic Hazard Inputs.

Program sessions will include Inventorying and Prioritizing Actions to Reduce Risk of Older Structures, and Seismic Response and Vulnerability—New Design. There will be unique sessions providing updates on EERI special projects, such as Learning From Earthquakes and the School Earthquake Safety Initiative.

Pre- and post-conference continuing education and training opportunities are available. On March 31, participants will learn from the National Earthquake Technical Assistance Program (NETAP) on how to identify potentially hazardous buildings before earthquakes occur (FEMA P-154), and how to utilize open-source software ROVER (Rapid Observation of Vulnerability and Estimation of Risk). Training on FEMA E-74, Reducing the Risk of Nonstructural Earthquake Damage, will be conducted in the afternoon. On Friday, April 3, EERI will offer workshops on earthquake reconnaissance for students and professionals, with presentations and a field exercise in the use of data collection tools.
